About this event

The Oktoberfest at Deutsches Haus, described as the biggest in New Orleans, is held at a Mid-City social club at 1700 Moss Street, across from Bayou St. John at City Park. The weekend marks German immigrant history across three centuries of the city, with brats, sauerkraut, and strudel as the classics. The fest pours more than 20 German beers, 13 wines, and 20 schnapps, plus a rotating menu of schnitzel, German meatloaf, cheeses, large Bavarian pretzels, and flammkuchen, with fries and chicken nuggets if that is too much. Music runs from yodeling and oompah to Schnitzelbank sing-alongs. Daily staples are the Dancing Chicken, a Masskrugstemmen stein-holding contest, a children's Kinderecke, a gift shop, and a historic exhibit.

Our take: Bike if you can, since bike parking sits just inside the Moss Street gate and the on-site car lot is limited and first-come.

Parking

On-site parking limited, first-come. No parking on bayou banks. Street parking around Esplanade Ave. Cabrini High School Dads Club parking, about a seven-minute walk. Bike parking inside the Moss Street gate closest to Esplanade. Canal streetcar to City Park/Art Museum, about a six-minute walk. #90 Carrollton bus stops in front; #91 Jackson-Esplanade to Esplanade and Moss.
