About this event

The Grotto's Christmas Festival of Lights is a walk-through on the grounds of the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, a Catholic shrine and botanical garden at NE 85th and Sandy Boulevard in Portland. Choirs sing in the Chapel of Mary, and the plaza tent rotates puppet shows at the top of each hour with Grotto carolers at the bottom of the hour, plus other musical guests. Snacks inside the Interpretive Center include hot chocolate and donuts. The path is about a quarter mile, paved with some slope, and a typical visit lasts 60 to 90 minutes. Entertainment areas are indoors or tented.

Our take: Wear rubber-soled shoes and allow 60 to 90 minutes for the quarter-mile lighted walk.

Parking

Parking in the main lot and on adjacent streets; attendants direct you. On busy nights use the overflow lot at the Parkrose/Sumner Park and Ride on Sandy Blvd and the nightly shuttle. ADA spots are in the main lot. Entrance at NE 85th and Sandy Blvd. Bus 12 and Bus 72 also serve the site.

Good to know

Festival runs Nov. 27 to Dec. 30, closed Christmas Day, 5pm-9:30pm, grounds close at 10pm. Wheelchairs borrowed first-come at the gift shop.
