Cyrus Chestnut and Friends: A Charlie Brown Christmas

Part of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Paradise Jazz series at Orchestra Hall, this holiday concert features virtuosic and playful pianist Cyrus Chestnut performing Vince Guaraldi's classic score from A Charlie Brown Christmas. Chestnut balances dexterous technical skill with a robust, soulful style rooted in gospel and swinging hard bop. Raised in the church in Baltimore, he was playing piano in his family's church by age seven and became known for an improvisational jazz-gospel and bop style he credits to those formative years.

Our take: Bring the whole family, since Guaraldi's tunes are as familiar to kids as they are to their grandparents.
