About this event

The Urbanna Oyster Festival is Virginia's official celebration of oysters and is billed as one of the world's oldest festivals dedicated to these shellfish. It takes over Urbanna, a town of just 500 residents, and the organizers say it draws more than 50,000 visitors. The grounds hold a fine-art show, a carnival, a children's village, the Fireman's Parade, the Oyster Festival Parade, and the Virginia Oyster Shucking Competition on the firehouse stage. Music runs from bluegrass and Southern rock to country and fingerstyle guitar.

Our take: Saturday is the day for the oyster shucking contest and the festival parade; Friday evening is the Fireman's Parade, when the town is closed to cars.

Parking

Friday the town is closed to vehicle traffic from 5pm to 9pm for the Fireman's Parade. Saturday the town is closed to vehicle traffic from 9am to 8pm.
