About this event
The Mummers Parade fills Philadelphia's streets on New Year's Day and bills itself as the country's oldest folk parade. Its musical highlight is the String Band Division, whose amateur musicians play banjos, mandolins, violins, accordions, saxophones, bass fiddles, drums and glockenspiels, with no brass allowed. String bands first joined in 1901 as a novelty, and today they stage four-and-a-half-minute shows with elaborate props, scenery and Broadway-style choreography, rehearsed weekly all year.
