About this event
The Amite Oyster Festival celebrates the town's oyster industry, which began in 1949 when Carlo's Oyster House started shucking oysters on South First Street. Conceived by Weldon Russell, it began as a one-day Amite Oyster Day at the Tangipahoa Parish Fair Grounds and is now a three-day festival in downtown Amite with live music from Cajun and country to rock and roll and reggae, carnival rides and oysters of all varieties. Local civic clubs organize it, and an oyster eating contest is a crowd favorite.
