Woolly Worm Festival

The Woolly Worm Festival closes Main Street in Beattyville for three days built on Appalachian folklore that the black and brown bands of the woolly worm predict how harsh the winter will be. The star attraction is the woolly worm races, where caterpillars climb vertical strings and the only rule is no touching, with cash prizes for winners. Friday is opening day, Saturday brings a parade of floats, marching musicians and community groups, and Sunday ends with a car show. Two stages of live music, from bluegrass to regional acts, play throughout, Main Street booths sell local food, crafts, jewelry and books by area authors, and Lee County 4-H runs a pet show.
