About this event
The Grande Day Parade is the centerpiece of Halloween in Anoka, the self-proclaimed Halloween Capital of the World and believed to be the first U.S. city to put on a Halloween celebration to divert its youngsters from pranks. The idea dates to 1920, when civic leaders answered soaped windows, tipped outhouses and cows roaming Main Street with a costume parade. The free parade starts at State Street and West Main Street, follows Main Street to 5th Avenue and finishes at South Street/Military Road, a route of 1.5 miles.
Our take: Spots along Main Street and 5th Avenue can be claimed only after 4 a.m. on parade day, and chairs set out earlier are removed by the city.
