About this event
The West Virginia Chestnut Festival celebrates the American chestnut tree and Rowlesburg's history, organized by the West Virginia Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation, which works to bring the tree back through education and planting seedlings. Rowlesburg Community Park fills with art and craft vendors, chestnut seedlings, honey products, ox-roast sandwiches and a bird exhibit from the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia, and the Cannon Hill historic site opens for self-guided tours. At the Historic Rowlesburg School Szilagyi Center, visitors find a World War II museum, the Preston County Sports Museum, lunch, the crowning of Mr. and Mrs. Chestnut and a technical session on chestnut breeding.
Our take: Pick up chestnuts roasted on the grill in the park, or buy them raw to roast at home.
Good to know
Park activities 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; lunch and ceremonies 1–3 p.m. at the Szilagyi Center (lunch tickets $12 at the door); technical session 3–4:30 p.m. Held rain or shine.
