About this event
The JAL Honolulu Marathon draws more than 35,000 runners, with no qualifying times, no lottery and no time limit. Saturday brings the Kalakaua Merrie Mile, a one-mile out-and-back race along Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki, named for King Kalakaua, the Merrie Monarch, and open to children with a parent. On Sunday, fireworks send the marathon off in the dark from Ala Moana Boulevard, past Iolani Palace and the Christmas lights downtown, through Waikiki and around Diamond Head to Hawaii Kai and back to Kapiolani Park.
Our take: Save room at the Kapiolani Park finish, where marathon finishers get fresh malasadas with their medal.
