About this event
The International Acadian Festival in Plaquemine is sponsored by Knights of Columbus Plaquemine Council 970, which started it in 1969 to bring publicity to the city and pride to its citizens while preserving the heritage of residents descended from the Acadians exiled from Nova Scotia. Legend holds that Evangeline traveled through Plaquemine on Bayou Plaquemine in search of her lover, so the first festival's queen, named Evangeline, arrived by canoe on the bayou. That first edition, called the Cajun Festival, had a parade, games and rides, a Cajun cooking contest and a cochon de lait. It now takes place at the C.M. "Mike" Zito Multi-Purpose Center west of town.
